Introduction to Cherven Fortress
Cherven Fortress is a captivating medieval stronghold that has withstood the test of time. Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Bulgaria, this architectural marvel continues to intrigue history enthusiasts and wanderers alike. In this article, we will delve into the secrets of Cherven, unraveling its historical significance, exploring its unique architectural features, and embarking on a remarkable 3D voyage into its glorious past.
The advent of 3D technology has revolutionized the way we explore historical sites, breathing new life into ancient ruins and allowing us to relive history like never before. Cherven Fortress, with its rich heritage and architectural splendor, has also embraced the wonders of 3D modeling and scanning. Let us embark on a virtual voyage and discover the advantages this technology brings to the exploration of Cherven.
In simple terms, 3D scanning and modeling involve capturing the three-dimensional shape and appearance of objects or structures. This technology employs lasers, cameras, and advanced software algorithms to create accurate digital replicas. The emergence of cutting-edge technologies, such as LiDAR and photogrammetry, has further refined the process, providing highly detailed reconstructions.

Back in 2021 we worked on the 3D virtual restoration of two cultural heritage sites here in Bulgaria for the Regional Museum of History – Ruse. The final products are VR experiences that are now exhibited in the museum.
In this promotional video, we present the Medieval town of Cherven. It took us seven months to complete the project while closely working with the experts from the museum and all of the data gathered through the years.
The production had three distinct phases:
1. Scanning, gathering data and understanding everything about the site and the way that people built and lived in the XIV century.
2. Creating a 3D digital double of the site (subject to another video). In this phase we created a VR museum that showcases the remains of the site as well as exact artefacts that were found there during the years of exploration.
3. The restoration based on hypothesis phase was by far the most time consuming and also the most interesting to work on. We created each and every building based on the specifications and information from the experts. In addition all of the market stalls and individual 3D models were also built. Then a VR experience was finalized and exported as a stand alone product.
It was an amazing experience to work on such an interesting project related to the preservation and popularization of Bulgarian cultural heritage. We, are continuing to expand our reach and work with more and more museums in Europe to truly bring the glorious past of the cultural heritage sites to life!
Cherven Fortress stands as a testament to human ingenuity and the power of architectural marvels. Through the application of 3D technology, we can delve deeper into its historical significance, unravel its secrets, and preserve its heritage for generations to come. By leveraging the wonders of virtual reality and accurate historical reconstructions, we can embark on a captivating journey through time, immersing ourselves in Cherven’s rich past.

Situated on the banks of the River Cherni Lom, Cherven Fortress rose to prominence during the medieval period, serving as a crucial stronghold for various civilizations. Its inception can be traced back to the 10th century, when it flourished under the Bulgarian Empire. However, with the passage of time, Cherven faced numerous challenges and eventually declined in the late 14th century.
Throughout its existence, Cherven Fortress stood as a testament to the cultural exchange between the Byzantine and Bulgarian civilizations. These influences are evident in the fortress’s architectural elements, artistic motifs, and religious structures. Cherven became a melting pot of different cultural traditions, further enhancing its historical importance.
Beyond its military significance, Cherven held a pivotal role in the medieval trade routes connecting Western Europe to the Byzantine Empire and the Middle East. Merchants, artisans, and travelers traversed the well-established routes that passed through Cherven, revitalizing its economy and contributing to its growth.
